Despite the drug shortage problems occurring all over the world, studies indicate that $5 billion worth of drugs in unopened packs are dumped in the garbage every year, often ending up being flushed down toilets or being incinerated. Flushing medication ultimately ends up harming aquatic ecosystems, and incinerating medication releases harmful dioxins into the atmosphere. The James Hollister Wellness Foundation’s aim is to alleviate the harmful effects of wasting medications on the environment by preventing them from being destroyed.
